Stamina

Having Austria and the Dolomites just around the corner, we can not say Slovenia has supreme ski resorts in the region. Therefore it is not a famous destination for skiing. But ski touring in a wilderness of Slovenian mountains can be just as good as in other famous places across the Alps. But without the crowds. There are a lot of good possibilities for day touring in the Slovenian mountains. Namely, most of the mountain huts are closed during the winter. However, few of them in the Julian Alps are still open all year round. This allows us to do some of the nicest multi-day ski touring in the eastern Alps.

Depending on how many days you would like to spend skiing with us and your skills and wishes, we can prepare an itinerary specifically for you. To give you a few ideas:

Ski touring on Komna

Komna is a vast plateau that offers beautiful panoramic ski tours to surrounding mountain peaks. It is the best for panoramic ski touring overlooking Bohinj lake.

Triglav Ski Traverse

The traverse is often referred as  ‘Slovenian Haute Route’. It’s a grand tour which offers a great ski journey across the Julian Alps. The journey begins at the Vogel ski resort, continues across the Komna plateau, goes into the magnificent Triglav Seven Lakes valley, passes Slovenia’s highest mountain Triglav, and finishes in the Krma or Vrata valley. Normally the traverse requires 3 days. To enrich the experience even more, we can extended it for a day or two. Especially if we add a climb to the summit of Triglav.

Pokljuka Ski Touring

After taking photos of the island on Slovenia’s famous Lake Bled, you continue to the Pokljuka plateau, also the place where the biathlon world cup takes place. After that, there is only one logical step, to continue further up into the wilderness of mountains and admire the amazing view of Triglav. The best way to do that in the winter is with skis.

Triglav Ski Tour

You do not want to miss one of the most popular ski tours in Slovenia. Skiing under Slovenia’s highest mountain Triglav is a must (1 day, moderate). The views are incredible. And as icing on the cake, you can extend the trip with Triglav summit, 2864 m (2 days, advanced).

The best period for ski touring in Slovenia is usually between January and mid-April. Due to the lower elevation of Slovenian mountains and effects of climate change, often in December, there is lack of snow and thus it is unsuitable for skiing. But sometimes, when the conditions are right, it is possible to ski already at the end of November. This is however impossible to predict.
