‘Velika planina’ means ‘the big pasture’ in Slovenian, with an ancient tradition of pasturing. In the old days, they mainly pastured horses that they used in the town of Kamnik for transport purposes. Kamnik was for centuries an important trade point. Nowadays, cattle are grazing here giving the great opportunity to sample the locally produced dairy products. The most popular of these among Slovenians is called Soured Milk, which is a kind of refreshing sugarless yogurt.
There are few options to get to Velika planina, either by car and hiking from there to explore the interesting pastures or to go with the gondola and hike from there around.
There is the possibility to combine Velika planina to a overnight and/or bigger hiking trip in the Kamnik Alps.
The best period to visit Velika Planina is in the summertime. July and August are the busiest months. Taking this into account, the best time to have a truly great experience would be September.
Later in autumn (late September and October) nature can be magical and temperatures are perfect for longer hikes. However, it can be riskier in terms of weather, since there is a bigger chance of rainy weather.
Winter is the time when much less people are exploring the area. But if you are more of an adventures type, you can have a blast exploring snow fairytale in the mountains. In winter time the area is an excellent choice for easier ski touring. The best period for this would between January and March, although it is impossible to predict when to expect optimal snow conditions.
