Technical climbing in winter in the Slovenian mountains can be a most challenging mountaineering experience. It requires a complex set of skills. Such a climb is often a mosaic of long approaches, ice, rock and mixed climbing, various snow conditions, demanding route finding and often a difficult descent. All this on the very same route. Having good conditions is very important and the ‘official’ difficulty grades do not tell much. It is for sure the most fulfilling and rewarding alpine experience you can get in the Alps in general.

Many of the mountains are accessible by gravel roads in the summer. However in winter this is not the case. There are also no cables or other similar infrastructure like in Chamonix for example. The winter remoteness makes tours longer and more complex, but it also makes your experience truly authentic.

Climbing trips in good snow conditions can also be quite easy and simple. However, basic knowledge of using crampons and ice axes is essential. For total beginners, we highly recommend classic winter mountaineering.

The best period is impossible to define. We can have a December full of powder snow, perfect for skiing but limited otherwise. Or it can be totally dry, just some ice and névé, perfect for alpine climbs. In general, there are always possibilities for good alpine winter experience between December and April, but you never know what exactly you will get – that is the beauty of it.

If you aim for a good ice climbing experience, we suggest planning from late December until end of February.
